Why SMS Is Different From Every Other Channel
Email gets ignored. Social media posts compete with infinite content. But a text message lands in the same place as messages from your family and friends. That makes SMS incredibly powerful — and incredibly easy to abuse.
Subscribers who opt in to your SMS list are your most valuable audience. They've given you direct access to their phone. Respect that permission, and the returns are extraordinary. Abuse it, and they opt out — permanently.
10 Rules of SMS Copywriting
1. Lead with value, not the brand
Start with what the reader gets, not who you are. 'FLASH SALE: 30% off all shoes for 4 hours' > 'Hi, it's [Brand]. We're running a sale today!'
2. Keep it under 160 characters
Standard SMS messages split at 160 characters — putting part of your message in a separate text. One clean text > two fragmented texts. Count every character.
3. Include your brand name
Especially on promotional texts. Recipients need context for why they're receiving this message. Put it at the start or end.
4. One CTA per message
One link. One action. 'Click here to shop, or reply YES to get our catalog, or call us, or visit our store' is too many options — paralysis sets in.
5. Use urgency — but only if it's real
'Offer ends at midnight tonight' works. 'Hurry, limited time!' is vague and ignored. Specific deadlines convert. Fake urgency destroys trust.
6. Never use all caps (except one word)
ALL CAPS READS LIKE SHOUTING. One capitalized word for emphasis is fine: 'FREE shipping this weekend only → swiftcopy.io/deal'
7. Write like a person, not a press release
SMS is an intimate channel. Formal language feels jarring. 'Hey [Name]! Your exclusive deal is ready 👇' > 'Dear Valued Customer, Please find attached...'
8. Always include an opt-out
Legal requirement in most jurisdictions (CAN-SPAM, GDPR, TCPA). 'Reply STOP to unsubscribe' at the end of every promotional message is non-negotiable.
9. Personalize with name and behavior
First-name personalization lifts response rates by ~14%. But behavioral personalization ('You left something behind...') can lift them by 3–5x.
10. Send at the right time
Best windows for e-commerce: Tuesday–Thursday, 10am–2pm local time. Never before 8am or after 9pm. Abandoned cart texts perform best 1–3 hours after abandonment.
